Trouble writing a novel

by Edward
(Belgium)

When I get an idea, I get the story written withing 1000-1500 words. Once I reached 5000, but it was boring to read until I tightened it up to about 1200.

My worry is that with chapters of 1000 words, it would look more like an anthology of flash fiction than a novel.

ANSWER

Hi Edward. Faulkner's novel As I Lay Dying, has very short chapters. There are many such novels. If you want to write longer chapters, try writing in scenes and sequels, which first shows the character in action in real time, followed by a response sequence. You can read more about that here: www.be-a-better-writer.com/scenes-and-sequels.html
