Stein on Writing by Sol Stein is the single most useful writing book in my library. I have a dogeared print copy at home, and an audible version I take with me wherever I go, via my computer and iPod.

If you're wondering if it really is free, I assure you that it is. Just follow the instructions and you won't be billed. I already had a yearly membership, but I got my partner to download the book and reject the membership to be certain the offer was good before I posted it. It is.

We have entered an era where businesses give away valuable products with the hope that we will sample their goods and want even more. This isn't a small packet of soap in the mailbox. This is the entire book, 11 hours of outstanding instruction. It normally sells for $20 or $30, depending on where you buy it.

Writers need to read as much as possible. If you don't want to read, writing is probably not the path for you. As a writer, you not only need to read, you need to own books and have them on hand.

Create a library so you can look to books you've read for examples, advice, and inspiration. Analyzing the writing of others is crucial to your success.

I read dozens of regular hardcovers, paperbacks, and ebooks a year—both fiction and nonfiction. I own thousands of regular books and hundreds of digital ones.

I have an annual subscription to Audible and download a minimum of 24 audiobooks a year. Each audibook has a sample I can listen to before I select my books, they're affordable, and when my eyes are tired from working all day on the computer, I can simply listen. I also listen to books when I'm walking, driving, or flying, which allows me to absorb considerably more information than I could otherwise.

As mentioned above, Audible.com allows you to choose any book with their free download offer, but if you don't already own it, I specifically recommend Stein on Writing. You need only listen to a few pages to understand why.

I've read dozens of books about writing, and in my opinion, you will not find a more comprehensive and intelligent book about what it takes to become a successful writer. If you're unfamiliar with this author, you can read about Stein here.

If you already own the Sol Stein book, my number two suggestion for writers is Francine Prose's excellent book Reading Like a Writer. As the title suggests, it will teach you to read differently, to assess the techniques of other writers, and to improve your own writing by doing so.
